Your New Princess, ceramic, wood and sound, dimensions variable, 2001

I am interested in the period of adolescence and the way in which it is a marker for so much of our identity as adults. My piece Your New Princess investigated my own high school experience of being prom queen.

I was exploring the way that objects like the crown, necklace and earrings become objects of power. I was also examining my own expectation for the role of prom queen as well as societies expectations. The voices of the megaphones acknowledged my conflicted need to both participate in and subvert roles like prom queen.

Sculptures from this installation were included in the exhibition Hopscotch: Associative Leaps in the Construction of Narrative, The Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, PA.
