Humming Dreams, 2010
Humming Dreams began with the ceramic spheres on the wall, which have a whimsical quality like candy dots or bubbles. The figure is being suspended in the air and it is held and cradled by a swing. The figure incorporates sound, which is a female voice humming. The body of this figure is like a pillow being squeezed together and it is immobile and constrained.
This figure is a representation of my own desire to float in the fantasy space of the bubbles on the walls. It is suspended by the swing, but the heaviness of its form makes floating an impossible reality. The figure hovers above pillows to catch and soften a fall.
Humming Dreams was exhibited as part of the solo exhibition, Whispering Bodies, at the Elmhurst Art Museum. This project was partially supported by a Community Arts Assistance Program grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
